643 Project Space is excited to host the 10th Anniversary Exhibition of the inkspots of San Buenaventura, Ventura County’s only fine art printmaking group. Titled, “ImPRESSive,” the exhibit will showcase new work by artists Christina Altfeld, Karen L. Brown, Beverly Decker, Virginia Furmanski, Rosemarie Gebhart, Judy Gibbs, Bay Hallowell, Tiger Huang, Colleen Kelly, Ines Monguio, Minga Opazo, Jane Peterson, Leslie Plimpton, Betsy Quinn and Monica Wiesblott.
The inkspots explore the printmaking process through a wide variety of techniques that include monotype, monoprint, drypoint etching, photopolymer etching, woodcuts, linocuts and relief prints. Printmaking is the process of making original artwork by running a prepared surface through a printing press, creating an original work of art on paper using ink as a medium. The subject matter of the artists’ prints is unique and individual to each artist. A free drawing for their annual folio project will take place at the reception that includes a signed and numbered print by fourteen artists in the group. Three additional folios will be offered for sale.
A series of special events will be taking place at the gallery each Saturday of the exhibition:
Saturday, November 4, 1:30pm, Gallery Talk on Printmaking Techniques by Bay Hallowell.
Saturday, November 11, 1:30-2:30pm, Printmaking Demonstration by Christina Altfeld & Virginia Furmanski.
Saturday, November 18, 2:00-3:00pm, Gallery Talk by Master Printmaker, Jim Webb, formerly of Gemini G.E.L. and Donna Granata, Founder of Focus on the Masters.
Saturday, November 25, 1-4pm, Closing Reception with tea and cookies.
The inkspots began when two of the original members took a printmaking workshop and asked colleagues who had studied with them at Ventura College if they would like to learn the technique. Finding they enjoyed the process, they started exhibiting their work. Their group later rented studio space, expanded and now includes artists from Ventura, Ojai, Summerland and Santa Barbara. As individuals, the artists show their work and are collected both locally, nationally and internationally. They have also been honored with a panel discussion done by Focus on the Masters that was entered into their official archive.
Please join the inkspots for a reception with cake and champagne and music by Caminos Folkloricos, celebrating 10 years of exhibitions on November 3, 5-8pm at 643 Project Space in Ventura. Gallery hours are Saturdays, November 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 1-4pm or by appointment, call 805-850-8848.
